Mr. Tsering Norbu (2015)

Tsering Norbu, Executive Director of the Pendeba Society, since childhood he lived in an agricultural and pastoral area 4300 Meters above sea level under the Mount Everest, this experience gave him a strong attachment to his hometown that has led him to choose a career in public welfare. During his tenure at local governmental agency and international NGO, he focused on environmental conservation and social welfare activities, and gradually developed a strong interest in this field. In 2006 he resigned from the position in government and devoted to the cause of social development in his hometown. After 3 years of hard work, he founded the Pendeba Society in 2009.

Main Activities: Environmental conservation and community development

 

"Pendeba "is a Tibetan term referring to volunteer community-service workers. Pendeba used to be a cooperation program between Tibet’s Department of Forestry and “Future Generations”, an international NGO. It focused on environment conservation and community development. The program began in 1994 and ended in 2006. With the legacy of the earlier Pendeba Program, the Pendeba Society was formally established and registered in Shigatse in 2009. In 2013, the Pendeba Society was upgraded as a provincial level NGO with an aim to promote the charity work and sustainable development of nature conservation in Tibet. The Pendeba Society list in the 5-A Social Organizations in Tibet, and won the UNDP’s “Equator Prize” 2014.  The Pendeba Society employs a model of "Three-Way Partnership" that mobilizes the community top articipate in the development of the protected area. Three-way partnership involves "bottom-up" initiative from communities, "top-down" support from government agencies, and "outside-in "training and support from organizations.
